Independent theory test booking
Book your driving theory test, with a retest included
Car and motorcycle theory tests, arranged for you. Every plan includes pass protection, a cancellation finder, rescheduling and a reminder before the day. Retests are covered only when our terms are met.
Checkout is being restored. Until booking is open on this site, you can book the £23 test directly on GOV.UK.
How we help with the theory test
A car or motorcycle theory test is a required step before the practical test in England, Scotland and Wales. Failing it means booking again. Book Driving Theory was built so the cost of another attempt, and the admin around the appointment, do not sit entirely with you.
Pass protection
DVSA charges £23 for every new car or motorcycle booking. Pass protection is there so a retest can be arranged without that fee again, up to 15 times, if you meet the terms.
Cancellation finder
If you are ready sooner than the date you hold, the cancellation finder keeps searching for an earlier appointment and is included rather than sold as an extra.
Rescheduling
If the day no longer works, you can ask for another centre, date or time. Car and motorcycle theory appointments are requested on the DVSA booking service.
Test reminders
A message goes out shortly before the test, by text when you have given a mobile number, otherwise by email, so the appointment is harder to miss.
Book Driving Theory Limited is not part of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), and not part of any other government authority. You can book a car or motorcycle theory test for £23 on GOV.UK. That official booking does not include a free resit. Our plans are a separate service, and a retest is covered only when the terms are met.
Find a theory test centre
Search by town or city. Each centre has its own page, using the same addresses as before. Opening hours and pass rates will be added back to those pages.
The UK theory test, in brief
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), previously the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), sets the theory test in Great Britain. These are the rules published on GOV.UK. Read the longer guide on our UK driving theory test page when that guide is republished, and the Highway Code pages for the rules the questions are drawn from.
What you sit
You book one test made of two parts: multiple-choice questions, then a hazard perception video test. You need both pass marks on the same attempt. The result is given at the test centre.
| Part | Pass mark | Available |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple-choice questions | 43 | 50 |
| Hazard perception | 44 | 75 |
You have 57 minutes for the 50 questions. Hazard perception asks you to spot developing hazards in video clips. You need a provisional driving licence before you can book.
Before you book
You must have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the 12 months before the test. Northern Ireland uses a different theory test service.
Say when you book if you have a reading difficulty, a health condition or a disability. If you pass, the certificate number lasts for two years. If you fail, you wait at least three working days before the next attempt, and you retake the full test even if you passed one part.
You do not need a theory test to upgrade an automatic car licence to manual, or for some other licence upgrades listed on GOV.UK. Car and motorcycle tests are the ones this site books.
Four steps
The full walkthrough will return on How it works. The shape of the booking is the same as before.
-
Choose a plan
Pick a protection plan. The plan is the fee for our service and is separate from booking on GOV.UK yourself.
-
Enter your details
We need the personal and licence details DVSA asks for when a car or motorcycle theory test is booked.
-
Set your preference
Tell us the test centre, dates and times that suit you, so the request matches your diary.
-
Pay once
One payment covers the plan you chose. A later retest depends on the terms, including how and when you tell us you did not pass.

It is easy to book, not as complicated as other services, and you help people quickly when they need it.

Questions before you book
Short answers from the old help pages, updated with the fees and pass marks currently published on GOV.UK. The full list will return on the FAQ.
What theory tests can I book?
You can book a DVSA car or motorcycle theory test through Book Driving Theory. Lorry, bus and Northern Ireland theory tests use different booking services.
Why book here instead of GOV.UK?
GOV.UK is the official booking service. A car or motorcycle theory test costs £23 there, and a fail means paying £23 again. Our plans add pass protection so a retest can be booked without another test fee when our terms are met, plus a cancellation finder, rescheduling and test reminders.
What is the official theory test fee?
On GOV.UK a car or motorcycle theory test costs £23. Lorry and bus tests are charged separately: £26 for the multiple-choice part, £11 for hazard perception and £23 for the case studies.
What are the pass marks?
You must pass both parts on the same test. The multiple-choice pass mark is 43 out of 50. The hazard perception pass mark is 44 out of 75. You need a provisional driving licence before you book.
What if I fail?
The test centre gives you a letter showing the parts you did not pass. You have to take the full test again, and you must wait at least 3 working days. If you booked with us, sign in and tell us within the time set out in our terms so the retest can be checked.
Are you part of the DVSA?
No. Book Driving Theory Limited is a private company. We are not affiliated with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency or any other government authority. You can book direct at gov.uk/book-theory-test.
How long does a pass last?
Your theory pass certificate number lasts for 2 years. Pass the practical driving test in that time, or you will need to take the theory test again.
Do you send a reminder?
Yes. Plans include a reminder shortly before the test date, by text if you have given a mobile number, otherwise by email.
